Thursday July 26, 2001 Drove up the coast from LA to south of Monterey. The coastline from San Luis Obispo to Monterey is beautiful. Rocky shores, sometimes above sandy beaches. Saw elephant seals on one beach. Bulls can get up to 18 feet long and 5,000 pounds! Glimpses of a couple of sea otters. Ventana campground [south of Monterey] is in a redwood canyon. Not real big trees, just big. For some reason I hadn't expected them to be evergreens. A stream runs by the campsite. Ground very hard---difficult to get stakes in. |

Visited the Monterey Bay Aquarium for most of the day. Fish are cool. I'd go there again.
We crossed the Golden Gate Bridge at San Francisco this evening. It was buried in fog, so we didn't have a real good view.
A bit of trouble finding a campsite tonight. After 9pm we're going to set up camp in a picnic spot. At the moment we're waiting in an unused driveway until 9.

On Saturday drove most of the day up the California coast to Redwood National Park. Some very tall redwoods. According to brochure they are nearly impervious to insects and fire---wow! That's one badass tree. Sunday we drove up the Oregan coast and stayed with BJ McEnerney in Corvallis, OR.
