Bryce Canyon, UT

Tuesday July 17, 2001

Drove to Bryce Canyon National Park for the day. The drive up there is itself worthwhile. Leaving Zion Park via the east entrance on SR 9 is amazing. Crossbedded sandstone astounds the eye. Near to Bryce we passed through Red Canyon, which is very appropriately named. [Sorry, no pictures of any of this.]

But all this is not to suggest that Bryce itself is unworthy of a two hour drive. It is worth much more effort to get there. Erosion has carved out myriad hoodoos, grottos, and pinnacles. The upreaching red sandstone fingers remind me of gothic architecture. We hiked part of the rim trail across blindingly white limestone. I wanted to do the Navajo trail, but Katy told me to wait for a couple of years when she'd be in better shape.
