I recently returned from a summer internship. To my surprise, there was two inches of standing water in my house's cellar from severe thunderstorms a week earlier. The storm knocked out the electricty in our area, rendering the sump pump in our cellar useless. Here are the pictures documenting the "Munson Engineering" that cleared the water out of the cellar. The small black object in the third picture is the portable pump that saved me hours of labor. Even with the pump, it took 2-3 hours to clear the water.
Note in particular the hose running from the cellar, up the stairs to the ground floor bathroom sink.
